The result of the National Assembly election declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday has pushed the opposition All Progressives Congress to the majority status in the 109 membership Senate. Before the election, the Peoples Democratic Party enjoyed the majority status in the red chamber with 64 members while the APC has 41. Other parties, like the Labour Party, the Accord Party and the Social Democratic Party, shared the remaining five seats. The APC will now have 64 senators; the PDP, 45; and the Labour Party, one. The development, our correspondent observed, will obviously alter the configuration of the Senate leadership in the 8th Senate which would be inaugurated in June this year, because the opposition APC which is currently in the minority, would constitute the principal officers. RIVERS State Governor Rotimi Amaechi escaped unhurt in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Thursday when gunmen, suspected to be political thugs, fired shots at his convoy. Two members of the All Progressives Congress were however unlucky as they were seriously injured in the incident, which happened at about 6pm on Thursday. The governor was on a door-to-door ward campaign of the area. An SMS sent to our correspondent by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. David Iyofor, indicated that the attackers made bonfire along a major road in the area to prevent the governor from leaving. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Thursday declared that most residential customers would not enjoy the benefits of the recent cut in electricity tariff. According to the commission, most residential electricity consumers in the R1 and R2 categories did not experience any increase in tariff when electricity rates were hiked on January 1, 2015. It said the increase on the first day of the year only affected industrial, commercial and high-end residential consumers, stressing that most people in the R1 and R2 categories would begin to pay increased tariffs from July 1, 2015. The Chairman, NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, gave the clarification at a meeting with members of the Electricity Consumer Association of Nigeria. This is truly Inspiring... New Delhi – A 70 year-old farmer in northern India survived a 15-minute battle with two leopards but lost an eye in the fight, a news report said on Tuesday. Dhan Singh, from a village in mountainous Uttarakhand State was walking home on Sunday when the big cats pounced on him from the bushes. The septuagenarian fought the leopards with his walking stick for nearly 15 minutes before villagers who heard his cries for help arrived at the scene and scared away his assailants. Singh lost an eye during the fight and was being treated for multiple injuries including, lacerations on his legs, waist and back. Report says in August 2014 a 56 year-old woman in the same region staved off a leopard attack and killed the cat using a sickle and spade. According to forest officials, the northern state of Uttarakhand has a growing leopard population and conflicts with humans are becoming increasingly common.

The supposed person under protection becomes the victim and not victimized by an outlaw but by the law itself...?  Katsina — A Police Corporal, Hamza Aliyu, has been remanded in prison for allegedly raping the daughter of a Deputy Commissioner of Police. The suspect, Aliyu is attached to the state transport and workshop department. The prosecuting police officer, Inspector Hashimu Musa, told the Senior Magistrate's Court that the suspect lured the victim to the old Berger Quarters opposite Mashasha filling station along Daura road, where he forcefully had sexual intercourse with her. He said the action is contrary to Section 283 of the Penal Code. The judge, Nafisa Bagiwa, ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison and adjourned the case to March 26.
