                             Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State now has the notorious reputation of having the most reckless convoys in and around Nigeria, as drivers working with him are well known for dangerous driving on the highway. The Lagos State Government says it would begin enforcement of a section of the road traffic law which restricts commuter bus drivers from driving for more than eight hours at a stretch daily. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa disclosed this at the weekend at a news conference heralding the National Council on Transportation conference which kicked off today and would end on Friday at the Lagos City Hall, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. According to Opeifa, section 44 of the Road Traffic Law bars commuter bus drivers from driving  for eight hours at a stretch, saying that government would begin enforcement of the new law in January 2014. He said many commuter bus drivers did not know that such a pprovision exists in the traffic law, saying that the next phase is to register all commuter bus drivers, conductors and owners of such vehicles so that through the registration, the drivers could be monitored effectively to ensure compliance with the 8 hours work rule and other as

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old robber, Prince Nwafor, with a visual recording of a robbery operation that he took part in. According to police authorities, the suspect is part of a robbery gang that specialises in snatching vehicles in Lagos and selling them at low prices. The gang was also alleged to have robbed in Ebonyi and Anambra states. The recording, which was captured with a camera phone, showed how Nwafor’s gang members robbed a motorist of his car in an undisclosed location. He, however, did not appear in the recording. The police said it was believed that Nwafor intended to release the incriminating video on the Internet for allegedly cheating him every time they went for operation. Nwafor, however, told PUNCH Metro that he made the recordings so he could blackmail his colleagues with it. Indications have emerged that the  Academic Staff Union of Universities may call off the over four-month-old strike on Thursday. Barring a last-minute change, the National Executive Committee of ASUU will meet on Wednesday night to consider the position of the congresses of the over 50 public universities on the offer made by the Federal government to revamp the institutions. The  union met with  a Federal Government team led by President Goodluck Jonathan last Tuesday in Abuja. The  ASUU leadership, after briefing the zonal coordinators  on  the offer, had directed the local branches   to organise  congress meetings between Friday last week and Tuesday (tomorrow). This is to enable all the lecturers to make input into the action the union would take after its NEC meeting on Thursday. Nigeria spent about N1.05 trillion last year on importation of vehicles and spare parts, while its local car assembly plants suffered monumental loss in patronage, according to the Director General of the National Automotive Council (NAC), Alhaji Aminu Jalal. An 11-year old pupil of Ogundimu Primary School, Iju-Ishaga, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, identified as Chioma Nwaonumah has been electrocuted on her way from school. The incident happened on Kayode Street. The victim was rushed to Pacific Hospital where doctors confirmed her dead on arrival and her sorpse was taken to the mortuary for autopsy.
