UPDATE: Police Brutality in Gowon Estate Egbeda, leaves One dead and 4 seriously Injured over Shop Space
The Already occupied Shop Spaces in question |
Here is an update to an earlier Story of Police Brutality which was reported on Friday on this very blog.
The name of the officer who led the band of Police officers into the Custom's Section in Gowon Estate is given as "A 2 star ASC I serving at SEME BORDER COMMAND of Customs by the name Mr. Nicholas I. Ezeiheo. He is about 6,1" in height, fairly light skinned, huge in body frame and has a husky and intimidating tonal voice. Pictures of some of the injured people involved in the process of restraining him from wreaking havoc within the estate on Customs' Wives and its residents are displayed above and several personal interview of what happened were taken into video recording.
Some of the eye witnesses claimed anonymity out of fear of being harassed |

As the story gotten from sources showed that the officer in question before bringing in the Police to unleash terror on unsuspecting residents on that very day had earlier entered into a monetary arrangement of N100,000 with another female officer who is of the Benin origin residing directly adjacent to the place in dispute (Block 10 flat 7 Customs' Quarters, Gowon Estate, Egbeda) inorder for a space to be secured for her and her daughter so they can use it for business as she couldn't apply for a space there because she just newly started living inside the estate and couldn't forcefully occupy shop spaces already taken by other officers so she needed the help of the Former provost (The above named) by bribing him with the sum of N100,000 to get her shop space too. But several trials had been made by the ex-provost in several other blocks to forcefully secure shop space but all to no avail because this trials happened when officers were available to challenge him for being unrelentingly covetous in his bid to own other people's shop spaces so he waited till most of the officers had traveled for the festive period and were away of official duty to cause mayhem all in the bid to sell someone else's shop space. The most annoying part of it all was the Police arm of the Nigerian government allowed themselves to be used for such selfish mission without considering the fact that they also resided in the same estate and there were governing councils that can mediate over such internal dispute without getting outside forces involved but no, they ignored all protocols and went ahead to cause several injuries and left one innocent person dead by a stray bullet during their insane show of gun display.
This same officer was reported by many residents has being involved in several scandals within the estate like
- the PHCN money scandal,
- the issuance of a fee to officers wanting to use open spaces for parties and gatherings,
- the general water scandal which had money donated not judiciously accounted for,
- smuggling of rice and turkey from his official post,
- the collection of rental fee from shop owners when he was the General provost
It was also reported that one of the laundry men taken by the Policemen is still in detention and yet to be charged with a single offence. He was arrested during the raid and he was badly beaten and many of the residents believe his state of health might be in danger as no family member of his reside in Lagos and residents aren't allowed to post his bail (he has been held for over 48hours, isn't that the most time one can be held without any charges?). One of the eye witnesses said during the police raid, the officer kept threatening people by screaming orders on the Police officers "to shoot that he will pay for their bullets"...
is this how low and misguided our security forces have become?
there is no loyal sense to duty and commitment to doing what is right?
is there any corrupt-free uniformed officer walking the ground called Nigeria?
Are the masses expected to live in fear of the unknown by those who voluntarily submitted themselves to protect us?
Many are the unanswered questions but at the moment all those involved in the shooting and killing of an innocent Nigerian and causing several injuries to other must be brought to book, only then will I know that the system is working...
More Updates to come....
