NEWSPAPER HEADLINES: PDP Enugu Speaker dumps consensus arrangement, joins guber race
Amidst the crisis rocking the Enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Eugene Odo, on Thursday dumped the consensus arrangement of the party for the governorship race.
The consensus arrangement initiated by Governor Sullivan Chime produced a member of House of Representatives, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the governorship candidate of Enugu PDP for the 2015 general elections in the State.
But Odo who spoke with journalists shortly after receiving the Nsukka United Front (NUF) at the House of Assembly complex, said he has picked PDP expression of interest and nomination form for governorship.
The speaker said he had not stepped down for anybody, even as he described the process of endorsing a consensus candidate in the ruling PDP as undemocratic.
“I have picked the PDP expression and nomination forms and I am fully prepared for the governorship race. You all know our story. Before now, we have embarked on consultations in the last three years. If I am elected, we will create wealth for the people of the state” he said.
Odo denied an alleged frosty relationship between him and Governor Chime, saying he nurses no grudge against anybody and there is no battle line drawn between him and the governor.
“The position of the governor is that of a father. I am not coming back to the House while the governor is not going back to Lion Building, Government House. I thank God that the governor is a democrat. I am only exercising my civic responsibility. I want to test my popularity. If the electorate say no, then I will go back to the drawing board”.
“There is nothing wrong with consensus but my quarrel is the process it was done. You know many of us had reservation at the stakeholders meeting presided over by the Governor where somebody was said to have been endorsed. Our national leadership frowns at consensus. However consensus will be reached on May 29 when the electorate will decide” he said.
